I called to Ballybofey today to catch up with Joe and Tracey Alexander and of course their beautiful daughter Siun, proprietors of Alexander’s of Ballybofey to feature their new Coffee Loft situated above their shop the shop.
This year are celebrating sixty years in business. Joe’s late mother Bernie was originally employed in the shop when it was owned by McClure’s, as a shop assistant. She and her husband Joe took over the business in 1960 and it has since been owned and run by the Alexander family.
Joe & Tracey and their daughter Siún have now opened a coffee shop and book shop on the first floor of the shop which has proven to be a great success since they opened the doors on 21stJuly.
Since coming to work in the business full-time with Joe, Tracey feels they have more time to follow through with plans and says that the coffee shop has just been a natural progression for them. “It’s something I have always talked about” says Tracey, “I love baking and hospitality and everything just fell into place for us”. The plans for the coffee shop were initially put on hold because of the lockdown but then the couple say they had more time to go in and do bits and pieces. We had great help and support from our families as well and it kept us all busy!
Alexander’s of Ballybofey is open every weekday from 7.30am and from 8.00am on a Sunday morning.
The Coffee Loft is open Monday to Saturday from 8.00am with last orders at 4.30pm each evening. The Coffee Loft offers delicious breakfast options such as porridge, scrambled eggs and breakfast sandwiches, lovely salads and homemade soup for lunch and of course plenty of home baked scones, cakes and tray bakes. They also have a gluten free bread and a gluten free treat on every day which are very popular.

Rhonda Gillespie is the manager at the Coffee Loft with the team of Aisling Davis, Laura Whelan, Angela Gallagher, Faith Harper and Hannah Harley at her side. “Our staff have been fantastic over the last number of months both in the shop and in the coffee shop. Without them all, we would never be able to do this”. Tracey concluded.
“The launch of the Coffee Loft is a fantastic way to celebrate our 60th year in business”, says Joe. “We are indebted of course to all our customers, old and new and we are looking forward to plenty more years of business to come”.
