Kilmacrennan Men’s shed officially opened by Martin McGettigan.

A historic Kilmacrennan cottage which for years was the welcoming home of the Peoples family is the new premises of Kilmacrennan Men’s Shed.

A huge crowd gathered for the official opening earlier today by Kilmacrennan native Martin McGettigan.

Shed members transformed the residence with an attached byre into a modern woodworking workshop.

Guests were given a tour of the facilities, a display of members’ woodwork, and an exhibition of photos taken during the renovation.

Kilmacrennan Men’s Shed is one of nearly 350 Men’s Sheds nationwide, 18 of them in Donegal, which promote men’s health and wellbeing through providing a friendly, informal way for men to socialise and work on projects together.

Support from Donegal County Council and local councillors, Donegal Local Development CLG (DLDC), and the Irish Men’s Shed Association over the past two years has been instrumental in making the renovation possible.

Shed membership is open to all men over the age of 18, who can use the tools and machinery in the workshop on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.30 p.m. for work on personal projects or to participate in group ones. The latter have included constructing a picnic table for Kilmacrennan Tidy Towns and crafting small wooden items for the annual Christmas bazaar to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Members are also welcome to use the Shed simply as a place to call in to for a cup of tea and a bit of craic.

Well done to all involved and thanks to Julie Costello for her help today.
