Just returned from a 2-night break in Edinburgh flying from City of Derry Airport to Edinburgh with Ryanair taking only about 35 minutes which suited me great.
The flights costed 55 stg each including 20kg suitcase, priority booking and 2 bags on board! Liberty Travel are now doing the flights 074 91 88380.
We got a taxi for handiness to the hotel, the Principal on George’s Street which took about 20 mins and cost 27 pounds. You either take a tram or a bus which works out a lot cheaper.
The Principal Hotel was very central right in the hub of all the shops with Princess Street just a 2-minute walk away.
If you are a shopper Edinburgh is for you. From all the designer shops to the High St shops, Jo Malone, Phase 8, Hollister, LK Bennett, Bobby Brown and various shoe shop etc etc.
Just opposite our hotel was the Dome Bar and Restaurant, well worth a visit. The Christmas decorations were simply amazing as you can see from the photos.
On the first evening we wandered about and found a lovely Italian Restaurant on the corner of Princess Street, dined there for the two nights. Next day we went to Harvey Nichols and all the designer shops (just looked in the windows) not a customer in any of them!
Jenner’s Department store has just about everything, like McElhinney’s here at home and well worth a visit.
Took a walk to check out the Castle, there is a charge of 18 pound each to get in, didn’t bother so headed down to the Balmoral Hotel for the craic to check out their Afternoon Tea………. not impressed whatsoever for the price of 47.50 for one and 3.90 for a coke…. a rip off! Cocktails 15 pound!
The Christmas markets was the highlight of the trip creating a lovely festive atmosphere, countless stalls serving food, drinks, crafts, hats and beautiful decorations.
The one thing I noticed was the people who are very friendly and helpful apart from one or two!
Thanks to Johnnie, Josh and Kristiana at the Principal Hotel for their warm welcome and the lovely tuck box full of goodies they left in the bedroom . And to Marion Molly for her great company and patience with me shopping!!
Edinburgh is a beautiful city and well worth a visit, check out Tigerlily Hotel also on George’s Street and if you plan to visit at this time of the year make sure to wrap up well!
