‘Alice’ in Lockdown!

Alice Lynch is well known throughout Donegal and beyond in her pub business Maggie’s Tavern in Carrickmore, St. Johnston. She is also the Chairperson of the Donegal Vintners Federation.

I interviewed Alice during the week to see how she is coping in lockdown. However, with her positive attitude her motto is to ‘Keep the Faith and stay safe’.

Obviously Alice is disappointed, she was due to open her newly refurbished function room next weekend for the June bank holiday but that is not to be. Last year she got the bar completely renovated for the 50th anniversary celebrations.

Anyone who knows Alice will know how hard she works not talk of having raised €300,000 for local charities in the last 20 years with events hosted in Maggie’s Tavern which is fantastic.

She told me  ‘I couldn’t believe that we had to close our doors on the 15th March and didn’t realise that the deadly disease that was in our midst.  Going on to ten weeks we have adjusted to a new way of life.  Social distance will be part of our future.  How that will impact our business remains to be seen but we are staying positive.

My pace of life has slowed down drastically.  Like everyone else the house got a bit of attention,  some of the jobs that I put on the long finger were completed.  I’ve taken the dogs walking most days and have enjoyed great family time.  Having been taken action to inform myself and up skill and get ready for our new business future whatever that maybe.  The government have been excellent.  I participated in multiply online training supported by the Local Enterprise Office and Skillnets.

Construction was underway to revamp our function room before we closed thankfully it has restarted again.  Currently we have competition going for its new name which will be announced on Tuesday.  Get involved over in Maggie’s Facebook page.  We look forward to hosting family events in our new function room in the hopefully not too distant future.  We are learning about the safest methods of reopening. We will take every measure to make sure that Maggie’s is as safe and as enjoyable experience when we welcome our guests back and let the good times roll again’ she concluded.  We wish you all the best as nobody deserves it better than you.

Cheers to the future, Alice with her daughter Maura.
