I was long overdue a visit to Gortahork, so last Wednesday I made the trip to Ostan Loch Altan to meet my old friend, Sean Mc Elwee, (not a bit change on him) who is the General Manager of the hotel.
Sean who lives in Dublin, but spends a lot of time in Gortahork running the hotel. He brought me on a tour of the hotel, including the bedrooms, restaurant and ballroom.
The hotel was originally built in 1870 and celebrated its 150th anniversary two years ago. It was completely refurbished and renamed as Ostán Loch Altan in 1997. With 38 bedrooms, 2 bars, 2 dining rooms and the largest function room from Dungloe to Letterkenny with a wedding capacity of 400 and a seating capacity of 600 people. The hotel is open all year round and on Christmas Day.
It is situated in the heart of a large Gaeltacht area. All the staff are local with front of house staff members are proficient in both languages.
While the hotel caters for a large number of tourists all year round, the local trade is a very important part of the overall hotel revenue. The staff always strive to provide genuine hospitality.
It is the ideal base from which to explore the numerous visitor attractions that are within a short drive of the hotel. These include the beaches of Magheroarty and Falcarragh, the mountains of Errigal and Muckish, the islands of Tory and Inisbofin, the mystique of Dunlewey and the Poison Glen and the magic of Glenveagh Castle and National Park. The area around the hotel is a haven for walkers, hikers and cyclists.
Thanks Sean for your hospitality as always and we will catch up again soon. Tel 074 9135267 or check out their website ostanlochaltan.com
